This was an incredibly rewarding project to work on. All the children in this commercial were either patients or friends and family of patients of Sick Kids Hospital, one of the most advanced children's hospitals in the world. Working with director Mark Zibert, we set off to create a cinematically inspiring and humbling piece that captured the collective efforts of children to help build a new Sick Kids Hospital. I don’t have enough words to describe the good this institution does for the health of the wee ones that they take care of, but making this project was hugely inspiring. Watching the courage exemplified in so many children that became the faces of this spot was amazing.
We captured this with two camera always rolling, one with a wider lens, sitting on a Movi for stabilization, and another camera handheld with a long lens, capturing the little connective moments. We shot on Arri Minis to keep the weight down, and I chose Zeiss Super Speeds, which have a nice crispness, but aren’t too sharp. We chose to shoot the project in Black and White as it is a timeless issue. We couldn’t get our hands on any monochromatic cameras, so we shot in color, knowing that we’d be desaturating completely.
